Atavismo!: My Home in Italy (Paperback)

Product Description
Ann?s journey to learn about her Italian heritage evolved into loving Italy with its wondrous food, medieval stone villages built into the sides of mountains, the colorful confetti shops in Sulmona, the tartufo festival in Succiano, the town celebration of Feragosto, and the festas in Goriano Valli.
The adventure of exploring off-the-beaten-track hidden itineraries, cooking in the church kitchen of a monk, shopping at the local markets in San Demetrio and L?Aquila, buying food from trucksters who delivered right to the front door, seeing ricotta being made in a shepherd?s shack, picking artichokes in her cousin?s garden, and living like an Italian in the village she was born in opened the door to a heritage and family previously unknown to her.
She learned of a scandal in her parent?s family, never known to her American family, and heard moving stories of unrequited love and wartime heroism.
From the fabulous cooks in her family, recipes for chinghiale, zucchini flower fritters, carbonara, chicken cacciatore, milk of almond from the times of Michelangelo, polenta on the board and many other recipes are included in this book.
About the Author
Ann is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia; loves opera, gardening, cooking, her new Italian family and foraging. She is an accomplished cook and cooking teacher with published newspaper features on her classes. Ann is currently living with her husband Ralph in Fort Myers, Florida.

Product Description
Enjoy a tour of Italy through a child’s scrapbook. Whether you are planning to travel abroad with your children or simply to expose them to foreign countries, Ciao Bambino! will provide a starting point. Your children will discover differences and similarities between Italy and home, while sharing a young boy’s vacation to Italy with his teddy bear companion. Bonus, you may learn a few Italian words and novelties on the adventure. Pronunciation and translation guide provided at the back of the book.
From the Author
With a four year old son and a one year old daughter, my personal goal was to write a book for preschoolers that exposed them to Italian language and cultural novelties, but was more than another picture dictionary. It had to be fun and engage the preschooler with familiar things from home, while sharing novelties from another country. Beautifully illustrated in original watercolor art, the 36 page book shares a tour of Italy through a child’s scrapbook. Throughout the fictional story, the young boy and his teddy bear travel companion share their travel adventure, and teach twenty five Italian words along the way. Fantastico!

Italy: The Best Travel Writing from the New York Times (Hardcover)
June 5, 2009 by Destination Guide
From Publishers Weekly
The staff at the New York Times, together with the Italian Government Tourist Board, have compiled more than 40 lucid travel articles in this lavish paean to Italy. These selections, plucked from two decades of exceptional travel writing, express the country’s unique diversity. Shirley Hazzard rhapsodizes about Posillipo, a historically rich headland of Naples where writers and artists have long sought “pleasure and inspiration”; Alastair McEwen describes Milan, Italy’s Big Apple, in all its “industrial, entrepreneurial and international” glory; and James Sturz tours a small portion of Alto Adige, an area in northern Italy that is studded with castles. The volume’s postcard-perfect color photos, which number close to 500, nicely complement the text, capturing everything from the snow-covered peaks of Monte Cervino and the luscious, undulating hills of Tuscany to the frescoed buildings of Trento and the vineyards of Chianti. As Eco writes in his introduction, “a journey to Italy… should always be seen as a journey of discovery that will reveal not one, but many Italies.” This hefty, handsome coffee-table book more than bears this out.
Product Description
Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and this beautiful, useful volume is an ideal reminder for those who have been there and fallen in love with the country, as well as a book to stir the expectations of those who plan to travel there. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, this collection captures the local color of every remarkable corner of this richly diverse land-the clamor and vitality of Naples, the idyllic enchantment of Lago Maggiore, the intriguing cultural contradictions of Genova, the breathtaking (if terrifying) cliffside trails in Cinqueterre.
Contributors include Oliver Bernier, Rachel Billington, Frank Bruni, Shirley Hazzard, Paul Hofmann, Alison Lurie, Malachi Martin, Alastair McEwen, Michael Mewshaw, Jan Morris, Francine Prose, Barry Unsworth, Muriel Spark, and William Weaver. Essays full of history, philosophical ruminations, humorous anecdotes, cultural musings, and useful travel information-in short the best of The New York Times talent-will make you want to drop everything and fly to this land that continues to inspire writers, artists, and casual visitors alike. AUTHOR BIO: Umberto Eco is the author of four novels as well as numerous works of criticism, philosophy, and literary theory. His fifth novel, The Mysterious Flame, will be published in June. He is professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna.

Living in a Foreign Language: A Memoir of Food, Wine, and Love in Italy (Paperback)
May 31, 2009 by Destination Guide
From Publishers Weekly
In this lighthearted memoir by television’s former L.A. Law star, Tucker delve graciously into the rich lifestyle, cuisine and local wine of central Italy when he and his wife, actress Jill Eikenberry, make an impromptu purchase of a 350-year-old stone cottage in the Umbrian countryside. The Tuckers break away from the Bay Area to acquaint themselves with the Rustico, their new second home. Despite speaking limited Italian, they quickly befriend their expatriate and Italian neighbors and with them set out to celebrate the regional cuisine found in local trattorias, tavernas and the aromatic kitchens of new acquaintances. Language gaffes and the occasional couple’s spat is to be expected, as the Tuckers begin to re-evaluate their lives. The simplicity and heartiness of Umbria begins to feel more like home for them, and little by little the Tuckers let go of their more career-ambitious lives in the U.S. Jill’s revitalization of her theater career in New York becomes as much of an accomplishment as her taking art classes with 16 non-English-speaking Italian housewives. Tucker simply appreciates his relationships forged with Gloria, the owner of the local orta-frutta shop and the town’s butchers. Guileless narrative intertwined with generous descriptions of Italian fare make Tucker’s food memoir and travelogue a satisfying look into the good life. (July)

From Booklist
Driving through Italy, television actors Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry and her young Korean^B assistant are seduced by the stately, relaxed pace of Italian life. Swapping their dream of a house in Provence for an Italian venue, they find a friend’s home for sale near Spoleto, and Tucker quickly seals a deal. The delights of Italian food awaken Tucker’s latent epicure. His determined compulsion to savor every edible raised on local farms ultimately obliges him to spend some serious hours at the local gym. Returning for a time to their California home, they want to share their love of Italian food by hosting a dinner party, but egocentric American friends can’t even gracefully accept this generous invitation, citing a catalog of dietary restrictions and food fears. Foodies will slaver and bristle with envy at the surfeit of pungently fresh truffles that appear at seemingly every meal. Mark Knoblauch

From Publishers Weekly
An antidote to the hulking volumes that offer encyclopedic amounts of information on a locale, McElroy?s book is designed more along the lines of a operating manual. There are no suggestions for where to stay in Capri or how to see the Vatican in a day. Rather, this book enlightens readers on the how-to?s of traveling in Italy: when to go, how to get there, what to pack, how to read road signs, which class to ride in on a train, how to use Italian phones, what to order for an aperitivo and why the tabaccaio is a resourceful shop, even if you don?t smoke. For first-time visitors, it?s a boon. McElroy, who spends a few months a year in Italy, explains everything travelers need to know in order to blend in and enjoy their trip. Each chapter is color-coded for easy reference, and Italian vocabulary words augment every section.

After interviewing Nan McElroy and reading “Italy:Instructions for Use” I feel as though I’m an expert on Italy…which I am certainly not. A great read before you go , on the flight over and easy to put in your pocket as you’re out and about. — Sandy Fenton of AAA’s Let’s Talk Travel
An outstanding little guide…[this] palm-sized book has scads of information on how things are done…. — Don Groff, Newark Star-Ledger
Few [guidebooks] devote space to practical advice, because there’s no room to do more than touch on the basics… — Europe for Visitors, Durant Imboden
I’ve been traveling in Italy for over 20 years and seldom do I find a book as useful and eye-opening as “Italy: Instructions for Use”. — About.com’s Italy for Visitors, September, 2006

Amazon.com Review
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive, engrossing and just plain fun-to-read guidebook than the Eyewitness Travel Guide: Italy. Spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, you’ll find three-dimensional drawings, floor plans, and detailed neighborhood maps, as well as timelines, charts, and even popular Rome bus routes. Broken into several parts–”Introducing Italy,” “Region by Region” (with northern, central, and southern chapters as well as impressive sections covering Rome and Florence), “Traveler’s Needs,” and “Survival Guide”–the guide provides the reader with a complete picture of the country. Readers will especially love the hundreds of color photos of everything from Rome’s famous piazzas, Navona and di Spagna, to the red-roofed villages of Tuscany to room-by-room descriptions of the Uffizi Gallery and the Vatican museums (where you’ll find the newly restored Sistine Chapel). There are also listings for the best pasta restaurants, wine bars, chic shopping streets, and some of the world’s most romantic hotels. –Jill Fergus

From School Library Journal
YA?Today’s students want pictures and more pictures, and they will not be disappointed with this series entry that provides similar coverage to standard travel guides. However, while other books describe a site or explain how to get there, Italy gives this information through maps, pictures, photographs, and cut-away drawings. Arranged by regions, it includes cities, villages, churches, food, museums, markets, and more. Many maps are illustrated so that armchair sightseers will know exactly what they would see on a visit. While visiting hours of tourist spots are listed, the costs, which are more likely to change, are not. All of the hotel and restaurant information is given in the back with prices shown in broad categories. Other material that will interest students planning a trip includes pictures of all the currency and directions for and pictures of telephone and rail-ticket machines.?Claudia Moore, W. T.
