This blend of travel adventure and personal history is often more entertaining than informative a la the other entries in the “Journeys” series. Canadian-born Stevenson (Kiwi Tracks) has lived across the globe, including outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise, Norway, which he describes here. He exults in the magnificence of the country’s fjords and mountains but is less enthusiastic about the weather (often rainy, even in summer) and the long winter nights. Unless one is familiar with Norwegian geography, the segments of his walk (with companion Annabel) from Oslo to Bergen may lack a sense of place. Further, although Stevenson frequently mentions taking photographs, they are, unfortunately, not included. There is, however, sufficient information about trekking in Norway to whet the appetite of those seeking a new travel destination. This book describes 20 walking routes in the main mountain areas of Norway, ranging from the Far South to the Arctic regions. Chosen because they are of particular interest to the visiting walker, all trips described are accessible by public transport. Many of the mountain areas are close to one another, making it easy to connect different routes for a fortnight’s holiday. Unlike many of the alpine areas of Central Europe, these mountains are relatively free from crowds, and few roads criss-cross through this remote landscape. Route descriptions, divided into daily segments, vary in length from a few days to over a week. About the Author

Constance Roos was born in San Francisco, where she made her home and practised psychiatry. She received degrees from Stanford University and her MD from Case Western University. She was Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiaty at the University of California San Fransisco. Constance was an avid traveller, hiker and climber. She had explored and climbed in Africa, New Zealand, Bolivia, Mexico, Europe and Alaska as well as the western states.
