The Food Lover's Guide to Florence: With Culinary Excursions in Tuscany

From Publishers Weekly

In her culinary guide, Miller, a freelance writer living in Florence, begins with the basics, noting the differences between a ristorante, osteria and trattoria; explaining the layout of the Italian menu (“With few variations, Florentine menus follow a standard order”); and sharing her thoughts on waiters and tipping (“Remember, no one is working toward a tip”). From there, Miller offers an introduction to Tuscan wines, and then organizes her listings in chapters such as “Restaurants and Trattorias,” “International Food,” and “Coffee, Pastries, and Chocolate.” For such Florentine specialties as bistecca fiorentina (a T-bone steak rubbed with olive oil, salt, lemon, and rosemary and served rare) she recommends a handful of restaurants throughout the city. She also notes where vegetarians can eat well and where to find kosher restaurants. This is a smart and useful tool for foodies passing time in Tuscany.

Bay of Naples & Southern Italy, 6th (Country & Regional Guides - Cadogan)

Review

“One of our favorite travel series, Cadogan Guides are British imports with a distinct personality. Authors have lived and traveled for years in the regions they cover and bring an in-depth knowledge of local history and culture to their guides.”
www.travellersbookstore.com

“Overall the top marks go to Cadogan.”–BBC Radio 4 (UK)

“Amazingly well updated and researched.”–The Times (UK)

Product Description

This guide has it all: Italy’s most desirable vacation destination is the subject of one of Cadogan’s bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. Along with color photographs and maps, this new edition contains the most up-to-the-minute practical information and listings. Cadogan explores the home of pizza, seeking out the pleasures of chic Positano and the Amalfi Coast, where Mount Vesuvius towers over the fantasy garden frescoes of Pompeii; the ravishing landscape of Capri; and vibrant Naples, with its world-famous restaurants and nightlife. Aside from the bright lights of the islands and the coast, the guide covers the inland regions of Southern Italy casual tourists rarely see: the mountain plateaux of rugged Calabria, Puglia, with its flavors of Greece and Africa, and remote Basilicata, the province of Matera, made a World Heritage Site for its astonishing neighborhoods of cave homes.

Atavismo!: My Home in Italy

Product Description

Ann?s journey to learn about her Italian heritage evolved into loving Italy with its wondrous food, medieval stone villages built into the sides of mountains, the colorful confetti shops in Sulmona, the tartufo festival in Succiano, the town celebration of Feragosto, and the festas in Goriano Valli.

The adventure of exploring off-the-beaten-track hidden itineraries, cooking in the church kitchen of a monk, shopping at the local markets in San Demetrio and L?Aquila, buying food from trucksters who delivered right to the front door, seeing ricotta being made in a shepherd?s shack, picking artichokes in her cousin?s garden, and living like an Italian in the village she was born in opened the door to a heritage and family previously unknown to her.

She learned of a scandal in her parent?s family, never known to her American family, and heard moving stories of unrequited love and wartime heroism.

From the fabulous cooks in her family, recipes for chinghiale, zucchini flower fritters, carbonara, chicken cacciatore, milk of almond from the times of Michelangelo, polenta on the board and many other recipes are included in this book.

About the Author

Ann is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia; loves opera, gardening, cooking, her new Italian family and foraging. She is an accomplished cook and cooking teacher with published newspaper features on her classes. Ann is currently living with her husband Ralph in Fort Myers, Florida.
